How we verify
Car Dealer Check is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- New York DMV: Facilities Licensed by the DMV (data.ny.gov nhjr-rpi2) — Every DMV-licensed facility with licence type, original issuance, last renewal and expiration dates.
- Connecticut DMV: Licensed Automobile Dealers, Repairers, Leasing Companies and Manufacturers (data.ct.gov apne-w8c6) — The DMV's weekly list of licensed dealers and other motor vehicle businesses, with licence numbers, DBA names and expiration dates.
- NY Attorney General: used car lemon law — Which used cars are covered by General Business Law §198-b and how the warranty works.
- Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 743f: used automobile warranties — CGS §42-221, Connecticut's required used car warranties.
- FTC Used Car Rule (16 CFR Part 455) — The federal rule that requires the Buyers Guide on used cars.
New York: we download the DMV's file of licensed facilities (data.ny.gov nhjr-rpi2) and keep facilities with a new car dealer (DLN) or used car dealer (DLU) registration whose expiration date has not passed. Other unexpired DMV licences at the same facility, such as repair shop or inspection station, are shown as facts. The DMV file limits names to 40 characters, so many names are abbreviated as the DMV records them. The owner name in the file is often a person's name, so we do not show it.
Connecticut: we download the DMV's weekly list of licensed dealers, repairers, leasing companies and manufacturers (data.ct.gov apne-w8c6) and keep New Dealer and Used Dealer licences whose expiration date has not passed. Where the list has a "doing business as" name we show it as the listing name, with the licensed name as a fact. A repairer or leasing licence at the same street address and ZIP is shown as a fact.
We list only what the DMV files show. We never say or imply that a business not listed here is unlicensed, and we do not publish complaints, discipline, ratings or reviews. Neither file includes phone numbers; dealers who claim their listing can add one.
"Years registered" (New York only) is counted from the original issuance date of the dealer registration at that facility. Connecticut's file has no issue date.
Order within a town: New York dealers by years registered (longest first), then alphabetical. Featured dealers appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.
What a badge means
Licensed: the dealer's new or used car dealer licence (Connecticut) or registration (New York) appears in the state DMV's published file with an expiration date that has not passed on the date shown. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. We re-download both DMV files weekly; a licence drops off the day its expiration date passes unless the file shows a renewal.
